Public Assembly to Commemorate and Honor Pope Francis

The world is mourning Pope Francis, who died on Monday at the age of 88.

Church bells tolled in Vatican City, Manila, Paris, and other locations as a tribute to the pontiff, a progressive reformer from Argentina. Catholics around the globe expressed their grief, while world leaders issued tributes in his honor.

As the church prepares for the intricate process of selecting a successor, many are reflecting on Francis’s legacy as a champion of the poor and a vocal advocate for various social issues. He called for compassion for migrants, emphasized the need for open discussions regarding the climate crisis, and condemned the ongoing devastation in Gaza. Within the church, he promoted inclusivity and sought to address the sexual abuse crisis.

“I am not a believer but what Francis said always touched my soul,” remarked a visitor to St. Peter’s Basilica following the announcement of his death. She expressed her sorrow, stating, “I felt his humanity even as a layperson.”

Here are some scenes of the reaction to his death.
