Four years ago, a prime riverside location in the capital of Sudan appeared to be progressing toward democracy. However, a military coup followed by nearly two years of civil war erupted as the army clashed with the Rapid Support Forces (R.S.F.), a powerful paramilitary group.
By March 12, when a photograph was taken, the river had effectively become the front line of the conflict.
This apartment block is situated on the northern bank of the river, while the presidential palace, a longstanding symbol of power, is located on the southern bank.
In April 2023, the R.S.F. gained control of most of Khartoum, leaving the army with only a few bases throughout the city.
Recently, as part of a large counteroffensive, the army and its allied militias have gradually regained territory in the northern and eastern parts of Khartoum.
On Friday, the military announced the reclamation of the presidential palace, with plans to expel the R.S.F. from Khartoum entirely.
However, analysts express skepticism regarding the likelihood of an end to the conflict, noting that the fighting has already devastated much of the city, leaving it in ruins.
