Ukrainians Express Feelings of Betrayal by Trump and the United States

Nataliia Klymyuk, a volunteer caring for a war memorial in Kyiv, expressed her disappointment with President Trump's recent comments blaming Ukraine for the ongoing conflict with Russia. Her sentiments reflect a broader sense of betrayal among Ukrainians following Trump's remarks made from Florida, where he stated, "You should have never started it," targeting Ukrainian leadership.

During a gathering at the memorial in Independence Square, Klymyuk and others mourned the tens of thousands of soldiers represented by flags at the site, as the mood remained somber. Klymyuk, who has dedicated 11 years to this memorial, criticized Trump’s long-standing relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting that his interests do not align with those of Ukraine.

Marina Ivashyna, who lost her father in the war and has a missing husband, echoed Klymyuk's skepticism regarding any potential negotiations for peace. This growing disillusionment with U.S. leadership is noted by analysts, particularly as relations between the U.S. and Russia appear to be shifting.

Previously, many Ukrainians had expressed trust in Trump when he was president-elect, but recent comments have sparked widespread disappointment and anger across the country. Political analyst Oleh Saakyan highlighted a fatigue with President Biden's indecisiveness, leading some to hope for a stronger stance from Trump against Russia.

Trump's remarks included derogatory comments about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, suggesting that new elections should factor into negotiations with Russia. Saakyan emphasized that Ukrainians value their freedom of choice, and Trump’s suggestions were seen as undermining that principle.

Ukrainian soldiers and civilians voiced their frustrations, with one soldier comparing Trump to Putin, claiming that Trump distorts the truth for his own agenda. Yulia Hrebnyeva, a city council member, expressed her confusion regarding Trump's speech, which she felt echoed Russian propaganda rather than supporting Ukraine's fight.

Trump's press conference was viewed as a critical moment, as many hoped he would reaffirm U.S. support for Ukraine. Instead, he made several inaccurate claims about Zelensky and the situation in Ukraine. The disappointment was palpable, especially after it was revealed that peace talks with Russia would proceed without Ukrainian participation.

Political analysts noted a shift in sentiment, with some expressing that the U.S. is no longer a reliable ally for Ukraine. The comments made by Trump have caused distress among various sectors of Ukrainian society, including those who oppose Zelensky but still advocate for Ukrainian sovereignty.

Despite the negative sentiments towards Trump, Oleksandr Merezhko, a member of Ukraine’s Parliament, emphasized the importance of maintaining dialogue with the U.S., urging resilience in the face of adversity. He reminded that, according to Trump, one should "never give up," a sentiment echoed by many as Ukraine continues to confront its challenges.
