Pope Francis Remains Cheerful Yet Faces Ongoing Health Risks, According to Medical Team

Pope Francis is currently being treated for a complex lung infection at a Rome hospital, where doctors stated that while his condition is not immediately life-threatening, he remains “not out of danger.”

The 88-year-old pontiff, who previously had part of a lung removed, is expected to remain hospitalized for at least another week. His medical team indicated that he is being treated for a bronchial infection that has progressed to double pneumonia, but he is not on a respirator.

Despite his critical condition, the pope is reportedly in a “good mood” and has even made jokes during his treatment. He acknowledged to his surgeon the seriousness of his situation, stating, “I know I am an older man, that I have a chronic problem,” and recognized the risks associated with his age.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the pope’s surgeon, emphasized that the infection has not yet entered the bloodstream, which could lead to sepsis, a life-threatening condition. He noted that the pope’s age and respiratory issues would complicate recovery should sepsis occur.

As the pope’s hospitalization continues, speculation about the future of the Roman Catholic Church has increased. Concerns have been raised regarding the possibility of Francis resigning, similar to his predecessor, Benedict XVI, who stepped down in 2013.

Dr. Alfieri mentioned that determining the appropriate treatment for the pope involves several factors, acknowledging the challenges faced. Dr. Luigi Carbone, the pope’s medical doctor at the Vatican, reiterated that recovery would take time, given the pope's age.

This marks the fourth hospitalization for Pope Francis at the Gemelli hospital. His previous admissions include colon surgery in 2021 and treatment for a respiratory infection in 2023. Despite his ongoing health challenges, including knee issues that require mobility aids, Dr. Alfieri confirmed that the pope’s heart remains strong.

On Friday evening, the pope was able to leave his room to pray at a chapel within his hospital suite.
