Brazil Indicts Bolsonaro for Alleged Coup Attempt

Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s former president, was charged on Tuesday with orchestrating a scheme aimed at undermining public trust in the 2022 elections and attempting to overturn the results despite a lack of evidence supporting claims of fraud.

Brazil’s attorney general, Paulo Gonet Branco, has indicted Mr. Bolsonaro along with 33 other individuals for various crimes against the country’s democracy. These charges align with recommendations made by Brazil’s federal police in November.

The case is set to be reviewed by Brazil’s Supreme Court, which will evaluate the charges and determine whether to order Mr. Bolsonaro’s arrest and proceed with a trial.

A lawyer representing Mr. Bolsonaro did not provide an immediate comment regarding the charges.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
