Angela Merkel Retires While Remaining on the Ballot

A chorus of criticism has emerged against Friedrich Merz, the leading candidate for Germany’s chancellorship, following his controversial decision to collaborate with a hard-right party to pass legislation. Notably, former Chancellor Angela Merkel has publicly denounced Mr. Merz’s actions, labeling them as “wrong.”

Merkel and Merz have been rivals for leadership within Germany’s Christian Democrats for many years. While Merkel served as chancellor for 16 years before retiring in 2021, Merz is now positioned to potentially succeed her in the upcoming elections.

Merkel's critiques and her legacy are complicating Merz's campaign as German voters express dissatisfaction with her policies. The current election is heavily influenced by issues such as a stagnant economy, a surge in immigration over the past decade, high energy prices, and national security concerns amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Merkel's decision to keep Germany's borders open to refugees starting in 2015 has faced backlash, with many attributing the rise of the hard-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party to her immigration policies. The AfD has gained traction by advocating for stricter immigration controls and currently ranks second in national polls behind the Christian Democrats.

Additionally, Merkel's agreement to phase out nuclear power and increase reliance on Russian natural gas has contributed to rising electricity prices and security issues following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Critics argue that her administration underinvested in critical infrastructure, leading to a competitiveness crisis for German businesses.

Recent polling indicates a shift in public opinion regarding Merkel's legacy, with 43 percent of Germans now viewing her policies negatively, compared to 31 percent who view them positively. This decline in support mirrors the experiences of former U.S. President Bill Clinton, whose legacy has also faced scrutiny.

Merkel's recent public statements and her memoir have not resonated as expected, drawing criticism from various political figures. Some argue that her focus on defending her past decisions rather than addressing current issues has alienated former supporters.

The refugee policy implemented in 2015 remains a focal point for voters, with concerns about integration and social assistance for migrants becoming increasingly prominent. A series of violent incidents involving immigrants has further heightened public anxiety regarding migration.

In response to voter concerns, Merz has proposed stringent migration measures, breaking a long-standing political consensus against collaborating with extremist parties. Analysts suggest that Merkel's refugee policy continues to shape contemporary political dynamics in Germany.

Despite evidence that immigrants have positively contributed to the German economy, rising voter unease about migration has led many political candidates to distance themselves from Merkel's policies. Merz has criticized both Merkel and current Chancellor Olaf Scholz for their handling of asylum and migration issues.

Merkel's recent criticisms of Merz have strained their relationship within the Christian Democrats, as she has opted not to take on an honorary party role post-retirement and has been largely absent from party events.

Her memoir, “Freedom,” reflects her perspective on the rise of the AfD, suggesting that mainstream parties have inadvertently empowered the far-right by adopting its rhetoric without offering viable solutions. While Merkel acknowledges her imperfections, she maintains a defensive stance regarding her policy decisions.

As the election approaches, the political landscape in Germany remains tense, with Merkel's legacy and the implications of her past policies continuing to influence the current electoral climate.
