Elon Musk Seeks to Challenge Germany's Quarantine on Far-Right AfD Party

Elon Musk is actively engaging in German politics, seeking to challenge a political blockade that has historically excluded the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party from government, despite its growing voter support.

On Thursday, Musk will host a live interview with Alice Weidel, the AfD's chancellor candidate, ahead of the snap election scheduled for February 23. This event, taking place on X, the social media platform owned by Musk, has raised concerns among Germany's political leaders regarding the potential legitimization of the AfD.

The AfD has surged to second place in national polls, garnering support from approximately 20% of the electorate through a staunch anti-establishment campaign focused on immigration issues. Unlike similar parties in other European nations, the AfD has faced significant isolation in Germany, where no other political party collaborates with it due to the country's historical context.

Despite its electoral gains, the AfD has been criticized for extreme rhetoric and actions, leading to the expulsion of members for racist and antisemitic remarks. The party is under surveillance by domestic intelligence, with several of its state chapters and its youth wing classified as confirmed right-extremist.

Former Chancellor Angela Merkel previously urged a united front against the AfD, emphasizing the party as a challenge for all political factions. This collective resistance has persisted even as the AfD has gained traction in polls and state elections.

Musk's involvement has drawn attention, as he has become a prominent figure among right-wing influencers on social media. He has expressed support for the AfD, labeling it a "last spark of hope" for Germany and arguing against its characterization as far-right.

During the upcoming interview, Musk aims to provide a platform for Weidel, similar to a previous conversation he hosted with Donald Trump. However, the AfD's positions often conflict with Musk's business interests, particularly regarding opposition to a Tesla factory in Germany.

The European Commission has indicated it will investigate Musk's influence on European politics, while center-left parties in Europe have called for measures to safeguard democracy against foreign interference on social media.

German leaders have responded with mixed reactions, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz downplaying Musk's impact on German voters. Polls suggest that while many Germans disapprove of Musk's involvement in their politics, a majority believe his actions could benefit the AfD in the upcoming election.
