Rubi Patricia Vergara, a 14-year-old freshman, was tragically killed in a school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin. The incident occurred shortly after she attended a craft fair with her family, where she had supported her best friend, Josie Hughes, by purchasing handmade items.
The shooting took place on Monday, resulting in the deaths of Rubi and a staff member, Erin M. West, 42, while six others were wounded. The assailant, identified as a 15-year-old student, also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the attack.
A memorial service for Rubi was held on Saturday at her family's church, where family and friends gathered to remember her as a kind and music-loving teenager with deep faith. Speakers shared heartfelt memories, highlighting Rubi's ability to bring joy and thoughtfulness to those around her.
Tom Flaherty, the lead pastor of City Church in Madison, remarked on Rubi's strong faith, stating, "Though Rubi has passed, her faith is still speaking to us." Attendees at the memorial expressed their grief through tears, laughter, and music, celebrating Rubi’s life and her devotion to God.
Rubi was known for her musical talents, playing keyboard for the church's family band, and was fond of cats, deep-dish pizza, and Christian fantasy fiction. She is survived by her parents, Vicente and Jennifer Vergara, and her younger brother, Adrian.
During the service, Rubi's uncle, Andy Remus, conveyed the family's desire to celebrate her life with joy rather than bitterness, acknowledging the shared loss experienced by the shooter's family. The memorial highlighted Rubi's kindness and empathy, with friends recalling her thoughtful gifts and the lasting impact she made on their lives.
Josie Staum, Rubi's best friend, fondly remembered how their friendship began a decade ago at a camp, where Rubi had comforted her during a difficult time. "Rubi's life, though brief, was a gift to us," she said, emphasizing the lasting influence Rubi's love and light will have on those who knew her.
