President Yoon Declares Martial Law in South Korea

President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea addressed the nation on Tuesday night, expressing deep concern regarding ongoing political turmoil.

He highlighted that since his administration began, the National Assembly has initiated 22 impeachment motions against government officials, with an additional 10 motions currently being pursued. Yoon described this situation as unprecedented in both global and national contexts.

The President accused the Assembly of paralyzing the judiciary through intimidation and by impeaching judges and prosecutors. He claimed that the executive branch is also under threat, with attempts to impeach key officials including the Minister of the Interior and the Defense Minister.

Yoon criticized the handling of the national budget, stating that it has weakened the state's essential functions and contributed to increased drug-related issues and public safety concerns. He pointed out that significant budget cuts by the Democratic Party have impacted disaster preparedness, child care support, and military officer salaries.

He characterized these budget decisions as a manipulation of national finances and accused the Democratic Party of using the budget as a tool for political struggle, thus leading to governmental paralysis and discontent among citizens.

The President condemned what he termed the trampling of constitutional order and disruption of state institutions as acts against the state. He claimed that the National Assembly has transformed into a negative force that threatens the liberal democracy of Korea.

In response to these challenges, Yoon announced a declaration of emergency martial law aimed at defending the Republic from perceived threats, particularly from North Korean forces and domestic anti-state groups. He emphasized that this measure is intended to restore order and protect the freedoms of the citizens.

Yoon reassured the public that efforts will be made to minimize any inconveniences caused by the martial law declaration, affirming his commitment to uphold the values of the Constitution while addressing the ongoing political crisis.

He concluded by appealing to the citizens for trust as he endeavors to defend and rebuild a stable and free Republic of Korea.
