Controversial Lyrics of “+57” Spark Outrage in Colombia's Reggaeton Scene

Lyrics from a recent reggaeton song titled “+57” have sparked significant controversy in Colombia. Released by a collective of eight major artists, including Karol G, J Balvin, and Maluma, the song has been criticized for sexualizing minors, particularly due to a line stating, “since she was 14.”

Despite its commercial success, with over 35 million streams and a top position on Spotify in Colombia, the track has ignited a debate about its implications for Colombian culture. Critics argue that the lyrics reinforce negative stereotypes and contribute to a perception of Colombia as a country that objectifies women.

The country’s culture minister labeled the song as “banal” and reflective of a damaging narrative about Colombia, while the head of the child welfare agency pointed to potential links to sex trafficking. In response, lawmakers proposed a bill to penalize artists for promoting explicit content, and a petition was initiated calling for the song's removal from digital platforms.

President Gustavo Petro also weighed in, highlighting the intersection of art and ignorance in such expressions. Following the backlash, Karol G altered the controversial lyrics to refer to the woman as being “18” instead of “14,” and issued an apology, acknowledging the need for personal growth and responsibility.

While some artists on the track defended their work, others, like Blessd, suggested that dissenters simply avoid the music. The reggaeton genre has faced scrutiny since its inception in Puerto Rico, often criticized for its explicit lyrics yet simultaneously gaining popularity across Latin America.

Historically, reggaeton has been a voice for marginalized communities, reflecting their social conditions. Critics of the backlash argue that a double standard exists, as similar themes in traditional music genres often go unchallenged.

Opinions among listeners vary, with some viewing reggaeton as an integral part of their identity and culture. Advocates for the genre emphasize the importance of responsible discussions about its content without resorting to moral panic.

The ongoing dialogue surrounding “+57” highlights broader issues of representation, gender dynamics, and cultural identity within Colombia's music scene.
