Tropical Storm Trami Strikes Vietnam Following Fatalities in the Philippines

Tropical Storm Trami made landfall in Vietnam on Sunday, following its impact in the Philippines, where it caused widespread flooding and resulted in at least 80 fatalities, according to officials.

The storm reached land near the central Vietnamese city of Danang, with maximum wind speeds recorded at 55 miles per hour, which is 19 miles per hour below hurricane strength, as reported by Vietnam’s national meteorological agency.

Trami had previously moved west across the South China Sea from the Philippines, where it killed at least 80 people and injured 66 others last week, as stated by the Philippine Office of Civil Defense. The agency also reported that 34 individuals were still missing.

As Trami progressed inland across Vietnam, the country’s meteorological agency warned of potential flooding and coastal landslides. Forecasts indicated that some areas south of Danang could receive up to 16 inches of rain through Monday night.

In anticipation of the storm, flights were suspended at four airports in central Vietnam, including Danang International Airport. However, all four airports were reopened on Sunday, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.

Tropical Storm Trami led to significant flooding in several provinces of the Philippines, displacing over half a million residents, damaging nearly 28,000 homes, and causing power outages in more than 150 cities and municipalities. Floodwaters hindered relief efforts in some severely affected areas.

Another tropical storm, Kong-rey, was reported to be near the Philippines on Sunday, exhibiting similar wind speeds. Kong-rey is expected to pass along the coast of Luzon, the most populous island in the Philippines, on Monday and Tuesday, before moving toward the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan.

Last month, Typhoon Yagi resulted in at least 24 deaths in China and the Philippines before crossing the South China Sea and making landfall in Vietnam, where it exhibited wind speeds comparable to a Category 3 hurricane. The storm caused at least 49 fatalities as it moved inland across northern Vietnam.
