Rising Violence Against LGBTQ Individuals in Ivory Coast Undermines Public Safety

Ivory Coast has historically been considered a safe haven for L.G.B.T.Q. individuals, despite facing discrimination in other West African nations. However, recent months have seen a surge in violence and intimidation against this community, particularly in the capital city of Abidjan.

Numerous gay men and transgender individuals have reported being attacked following calls from social media influencers to “hunt woubis,” a derogatory term for effeminate gay men. Incidents of violence have included assaults at public events, such as a soccer match where fans displayed a homophobic banner.

In a concerning political development, the youngest member of the Ivorian Parliament has pledged to introduce legislation aimed at countering the perceived expansion of homosexuality, raising alarms among rights organizations about the potential rise of anti-L.G.B.T.Q. sentiment in the country.

Activists note that the recent hostility mirrors the challenges faced by L.G.B.T.Q. individuals in other West and Central African nations, where laws against homosexuality are prevalent. Although same-sex sexual activity is neither explicitly legal nor illegal in Ivory Coast, the cultural climate has shifted, prompting fears for the safety of community members.

Incidents of violence have escalated, with over 45 reported assaults since early September, according to the Ivorian L.G.B.T.Q. group Gromo. One victim, Franck Blé, recounted being brutally attacked by assailants who targeted him for his sexual orientation.

The wave of homophobia has been fueled by misinformation spread on social media, including false claims about government support for L.G.B.T.Q. rights. Government officials have publicly denied any intentions to legalize same-sex marriage, further complicating the community's situation.

As the country approaches a presidential election, there are concerns that political candidates may exploit anti-L.G.B.T.Q. sentiments to gain support. Influencers promoting violence against gay individuals have been particularly influential, with one notable figure having his social media account suspended for inciting violence.

Recent violent incidents have led to a climate of fear within the L.G.B.T.Q. community, with many individuals opting to avoid public gatherings. Activists are divided on how to respond, with some advocating for visibility and others suggesting a more cautious approach.

Despite a decrease in new H.I.V. infections in the country, misinformation continues to fuel homophobic rhetoric, complicating the community's fight for safety and acceptance in Ivory Coast.
