During a recent assignment in Newfoundland and Labrador for The New York Times, I explored the moose population introduced in 1904 to attract hunters. With no significant predators, their numbers have surged to 120,000-150,000, equating to one moose per four residents. While moose hunting is culturally significant, collisions occur daily, posing dangers. Despite efforts to encounter moose during our reporting, we faced challenges and ultimately returned home empty-handed. Later, a colleague successfully spotted four moose in Ontario, highlighting our missed opportunity.
