Georgia's highest court reinstates the state's six-week abortion prohibition.

Georgia Supreme Court Upholds Abortion Law, Limiting Access to Procedure In a recent decision, the Georgia Supreme Court reinstated a state law known as the LIFE Act, which restricts abortions beyond six weeks of pregnancy. The law was set to take effect again after being briefly overturned by a lower court judge. The ruling, supported by six justices, comes amid a broader legal battle over abortion rights following the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. The lower-court judge's decision to allow abortions up to 22 weeks in Georgia was met with backlash from Republican state officials, who swiftly appealed the ruling. Despite the reinstatement of the six-week ban, the State Supreme Court kept a provision blocking prosecutors from accessing women's medical records post-abortion. Abortion providers and advocacy groups continue to challenge the restrictive law, emphasizing the importance of reproductive rights and access to safe healthcare. The issue of abortion remains a key political and campaign topic in Georgia, with Vice President Kamala Harris advocating for women's right to choose and highlighting cases of women who faced dire consequences due to limited access to abortions and medical care.
