Polio vaccinations start in northern Gaza following the detention of a UN convoy by Israel.

The polio vaccination campaign in northern Gaza faced delays after an Israeli military detention of a UN convoy. The convoy, carrying international and local staff from various UN agencies, was stopped for over eight hours and threatened with detention. Despite this, the Gazan Ministry of Health reported that vaccinations had started in the north and would continue through Thursday. Israeli military stated that the convoy was detained due to intelligence suggesting "Palestinian suspects" among the staff. The episode highlighted the challenges of the vaccination campaign, which aims to prevent a potential polio outbreak in Gaza. The region's infrastructure is devastated, making it difficult for medical workers and individuals to access vaccination sites. This effort follows the identification of the poliovirus in Gaza wastewater in July, raising concerns of a potential outbreak. However, U.N. convoys in Gaza have faced repeated detentions or fire from the Israeli military, despite coordination. The vaccination campaign aims to inoculate about 150,000 children in the northern Gaza area. The Israeli military issued evacuation orders in response to projectiles fired from the area, affecting over 55 evacuation orders and deepening the humanitarian crisis. The UN emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety and security of their colleagues amidst these challenges.
