In Switzerland, the use of a suicide capsule has sparked a heated debate.

Authorities in northern Switzerland are investigating an assisted suicide case involving a controversial device that uses nitrogen gas to induce death. A 64-year-old American woman died in a remote forest with the help of two right-to-die groups using a Sarco capsule. The inventor of the device, Philip Nitschke, confirmed its first use, resulting in a peaceful death. Several individuals, including lawyers and the director of an assisted-suicide group, have been arrested for their involvement. The incident has sparked debate over the legality and ethics of the Sarco capsule in Switzerland, with some officials criticizing its use. Despite claims of compliance with Swiss law, concerns remain about the device's humaneness and legality. The Last Resort, the group facilitating the assisted suicide, maintains that their actions were lawful based on legal advice. Authorities are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman's death, including an autopsy to be performed in Zurich.
