Recent relief from cooler and wetter weather is aiding firefighters as they continue battling three major wildfires in Southern California, which have displaced thousands and burned over 100,000 acres combined. The fires have destroyed numerous homes and stretched firefighting resources thin. The Bridge fire, the largest among the three, has burned 51,000 acres and destroyed multiple homes. The Airport fire, spanning Orange and Riverside Counties, has injured two civilians and 10 firefighters. The Line fire, believed to have been started by an individual, has burned 18 percent containment. Across the West, more than 65 large wildfires are currently burning, with Oregon and Idaho also facing significant blazes. The recent rainfall in Southern California led to increased vegetation growth, which, combined with a hot summer and heat waves, has fueled the fires. Despite this, the arrival of cooler temperatures and improved humidity is providing some hope for containment. Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange, and Riverside counties due to the ongoing wildfires.
