The Mpox case in Sweden has raised worries about a potential increase across Europe.

A new strain of the disease mpox has been detected in Sweden, signifying its spread beyond Africa, where it has caused a growing crisis. The emergence of the disease outside Africa was confirmed just after the World Health Organization declared a global health emergency. With increased travel between Europe and Africa, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control anticipates more imported cases and has advised member countries to heighten preparedness. The first case of the new strain, known as Clade I, in Sweden has prompted public health warnings and preparations in several European countries. This outbreak differs from the 2022 epidemic driven by a different strain (Clade IIb) and poses new challenges due to its mode of transmission and vulnerability factors. The disease, primarily transmitted through close contact, has caused concern among individuals traveling to affected areas. The European Union and other countries have pledged to donate vaccine doses to aid in slowing the spread of the disease in Africa. As of now, Sweden is the only country outside Africa to have identified a case of the new strain. Other nations are urged to prepare and remain vigilant as the situation evolves.
