The fires close to Athens caused widespread devastation.

One person has died and significant damage has been caused by wildfires northeast of Athens, Greece, covering nearly 25,000 acres. Although the threat to Athens has decreased, the extent of the damage is still unclear. Favorable conditions have aided firefighting efforts, including the use of Lake Marathon for water reloads. Greece has implemented new strategies, including drone usage, to combat wildfires, but extreme conditions remain a challenge. The cause of the fire is unknown, and support from EU partners and other countries is being sought. The government is coordinating a response and plans to provide compensation to affected residents.
