Archaeologists in Bulgaria unexpectedly discovered a well-preserved marble statue in an ancient Roman sewer near the village of Rupite. The statue is believed to date back to the late fourth century and may depict the god Hermes. Its preservation is seen as a testament to pagan efforts to protect their religious heritage as Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire. The discovery offers insights into the local culture of the region and is considered a rare find in southwest Bulgaria. The statue is currently being carefully extracted and will be analyzed before being displayed in the local history museum. This remarkable discovery provides a unique opportunity to enrich our understanding of the area's history and culture.
