When these snakes pretend to be dead, defecating is a natural part of their performance.

Snakes on Golem Grad, a North Macedonian island, have a unique defense mechanism—playing dead with dramatic flair, including soiling themselves and even bleeding from their mouths. Researchers suggest that this repulsive display may help them evade predators. The study, focused on dice snakes, found that the use of these tactics varied by age and effectiveness but seemed to be most successful for adult snakes. This strategy could buy crucial time for escape, especially in environments with abundant prey to distract predators. However, the researchers caution that more study across different snake populations is needed to fully understand this behavior.
