Costa Rica moves hundreds of animals after banning public zoos.

Costa Rica recently announced the closure of its two remaining state zoos, following a decade-long legal battle after the country passed a law to prohibit keeping wild animals in government-sponsored captivity. The Ministry of Environment and Energy revealed that it would not renew its contract with the foundation running the zoos, leading to the closure of the Simón Bolívar Zoo and the Santa Ana Conservation Center. A total of 287 animals are being transferred to a rehabilitation center for evaluation, with plans to create sanctuaries for those unable to return to the wild. This decision marks a significant step in wildlife protection and sets an example for other countries. While some challenges exist in reintroducing animals to the wild, the move is seen as a positive trend in animal conservation.
