Memory Banda and her sister, once inseparable, saw their close bond shattered when her sister was forced into marriage at age 11, following her return from an initiation camp. This traumatic event sparked Memory's activism against child marriage in Malawi. Despite the country outlawing child marriage in 2015, enforcement remains weak, and the practice persists. Memory's grassroots efforts, alongside the Girls Empowerment Network, led to successful campaigns against child marriage and the establishment of the Foundation for Girls Leadership. Her work has impacted over 500 girls and garnered international recognition. However, she acknowledges the need for a multidimensional solution to address the issue, including economic opportunities and changing societal perspectives. Memory's future plans involve lobbying for a "girls fund" and establishing a vocational school to support girls affected by early marriage. Her ultimate goal is to create an equal and safe society for girls in Malawi.
