Daily Dumpling: A Concise History of Foreign Involvement in Haiti

Kenyan police officers are set to go to Haiti in an effort to restore order to a country plagued by widespread violence and instability. This is not the first time international forces have intervened in Haiti. The United States has a history of involvement, including a 20-year occupation starting in 1915. The United Nations has also conducted multiple missions, the most notable being the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) from 2004 to 2017. While these interventions have had some successes, such as training the Haitian National Police, they have also left troubling legacies of sexual exploitation, civilian casualties, and deadly disease outbreaks, including cholera. Critics argue that these interventions have not been beneficial to Haiti and that the country should be allowed to take responsibility for its own affairs.
