Three officers from the Alameda Police Department in Northern California are facing charges of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Mario Gonzalez, 26. The charges come after a review by the Alameda County district attorney’s Public Accountability Unit, following an incident where the officers held Mr. Gonzalez face down for about five minutes. This comes after the previous district attorney closed the investigation in 2022, citing insufficient evidence. The new charges were announced after a recall campaign against the district attorney had gathered enough signatures. The officers are set to be arraigned on May 30, and they are expected to plead not guilty.
