India’s election authorities have ordered a redo of voting in several polling places in Manipur due to armed attacks and disruptions during the initial voting. The state has been embroiled in ethnic conflict over tribal status privileges, leading to violence and displacement. The Election Commission of India has directed a revote at 11 polling stations after reports of mob violence, gunfire, and tampering with voting machines. Opposition groups are calling for new voting in more than 45 polling booths. The incidents have raised concerns about the fairness of the election process in Manipur, which is governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party.
