Several cases have emerged where individuals were charged with drunken driving despite not consuming alcohol. This was due to a rare condition called auto-brewery syndrome (A.B.S.), where the body ferments carbohydrates into ethanol, leading to intoxication. The syndrome has been known for over a century and can result in high blood-alcohol levels without conventional alcohol consumption. Recently, a Belgian man was acquitted of a DUI charge after being diagnosed with A.B.S. following multiple incidents. While only a few dozen cases have been formally diagnosed, studies suggest that the condition may be more prevalent than realized. The disorder has garnered attention due to its unusual nature and the potential for severe legal and medical implications.
