Asylum seekers already in the U.K. express increased worry due to Rwanda law.

Last month, Mohsen, a 36-year-old from Iran, risked his life by boarding a rubber boat in France, aiming to reach Britain for a chance at a new life. Despite the dangers and the British government's plan to deport some asylum seekers to Rwanda, he felt he had no other choice. The recent passing of a law by Britain's Conservative government to enable deportation flights to Rwanda has caused anxiety and fear among asylum seekers. Many express concerns about Rwanda's human rights record and fear being sent there. The Supreme Court had previously ruled Rwanda unsafe for refugees, but the new law aims to override this ruling. Asylum seekers living in limbo in the UK are experiencing high levels of stress and uncertainty due to the new legislation. The government's policy is based on the belief that it will deter asylum seekers from attempting to reach Britain, but its effectiveness remains to be seen. As of December 2023, approximately 95,252 asylum cases were awaiting initial decisions in the UK, leaving many individuals in a state of prolonged uncertainty and fear.
