‘West Indies’: The Slave Ship Musical You Didn’t Know Existed

'West Indies: The Fugitive Slaves of Liberty,' a 1979 African musical film by Mauritanian French director Med Hondo, has gained a dedicated fan base over the years. The movie, shot on a replica of a slave ship in an abandoned Citroën factory in Paris, offers a unique portrayal of French colonialism. Despite facing challenges in financing and recognition, a new 4K restoration and a screening at Film Forum aim to bring this groundbreaking film into the wider canon. Director Hondo's uncompromising approach to addressing social issues through his artistry has contributed to his limited mainstream acceptance.
