The White House Has That Sinking Feeling (Thanks to an Artist)

The White House's northern facade, reimagined in dirt and tilted on a rooftop at the Whitney Biennial, symbolizes American power's decline. Artist Kiyan Williams, known for using soil from historically significant sites, aims to foster regeneration in hostile conditions. Williams' work reflects personal and political histories, challenging traditional symbols and structures of power. The crumbling White House facsimile and a monument to trans activist Marsha P. Johnson are displayed, funded by art collector Michael Sherman. Williams, supported by institutions, creates earth sculptures with no clear market, exploring themes of decolonization and transformation. The artist sees their work as an expression of queer and trans embodiment, reflecting a balance of being off-axis yet in harmony.
