Legal Settlement Clarifies Reach of Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Law

Florida and opponents of the "Don't Say Gay" law reached a settlement clarifying its scope. The law, which prohibits teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity in K-8, will still be in effect. However, the settlement allows discussion of LGBTQ+ topics as long as it's not part of formal instruction. Both sides claimed victory, with the plaintiffs emphasizing the end of discrimination resulting from ambiguous language, while Governor DeSantis' office asserted that the law's true scope had been confirmed. The settlement also addresses concerns about art, literature, safe spaces, and student organizations related to LGBTQ+ issues.
