Dante Lauretta, a planetary scientist at the University of Arizona and leader of the OSIRIS-REx mission, recently reflected on the mission's completion and the ongoing impact. The spacecraft retrieved a sample from the asteroid Bennu, shedding light on the potential role of asteroids in seeding Earth with life's building blocks. Despite some challenges during the sample retrieval process, the team exceeded the sample size promised to NASA. In analyzing the sample, they discovered unexpected phosphate-rich material, raising questions about previous assumptions and hinting at the potential presence of liquid water on Bennu. Lauretta also discussed his newly published book, "The Asteroid Hunter," which intertwines the mission's scientific endeavors with personal reflections. Looking ahead, he emphasized his role as the first director of the Arizona Astrobiology Center, where he aims to foster student and community engagement in astrobiological research.
