Apple Steps Up Its Lobbying to Change Patent Rules

Apple is increasing its efforts to change patent rules by lobbying lawmakers and seeking to rewrite the U.S. International Trade Commission's (I.T.C.) rules. The tech giant is campaigning for legislation that would make some patent owners ineligible to bring complaints before the I.T.C. and is enlisting the help of a former I.T.C. commissioner. This comes as Apple is embroiled in legal battles with medical device makers over technology in the Apple Watch. The company is seeking to avoid import bans on its products by emphasizing the public interest and potential harm to Americans. Apple's lobbying efforts have expanded significantly, and it is working with a coalition of companies to support legislation aimed at curbing abuse of the I.T.C. by patent trolls. The company's lobbying activities have also involved influencing committee reports and engaging with congressional leaders.
