Starbucks and Union Agree to Work Out Framework for Contract Talks

Starbucks and the union representing employees in 400 U.S. stores are starting discussions on a framework for labor agreements and to resolve litigation. This marks a shift in strategy for Starbucks, which previously resisted union organizing. The company aims to have contracts negotiated and ratified by the end of the year and is providing benefits to unionized workers as a gesture of good faith. Both sides hope to return to the bargaining table soon. The development has surprised workers leading the organizing efforts. The shift is attributed to the new CEO, Laxman Narasimhan. The breakthrough came during mediation to resolve lawsuits between the union and the company. Unaddressed is a campaign for three seats on the Starbucks board backed by a coalition of unions.
