Review: Showing Off Rock-Solid Technique and Some Erotic Acrobatics


Philadanco! made a return to the Joyce Theater in New York featuring four new premieres that showcased the dancers' technical skills, but lacked depth and artistry. The performances included "From Dystopia to Our Declaration" by Nijawwon Matthews, which was described as murky and hindered by the accompanying music, and "Mating Season" by Christopher Rudd, which featured erotic acrobatics set to unobtrusive electronic music. The choreography aimed to promote gender equity, with some same-gender partnering and a reversal of gender ratios in the dance movements.
