Parents Are Highly Involved in Their Adult Children’s Lives, and Fine With It


Parents are increasingly involved in their adult children's lives, offering advice and financial support. Despite concerns about over-involvement, a Pew Research Center survey found that most parents and young adults have healthy and fulfilling relationships. The close relationships do not seem to hinder young people from reaching milestones of independence. While some experts warn of overparenting, close relationships between parents and grown children have been found to protect children from unhealthy behaviors and help them cope with change. Factors such as economic changes, technology, and a decreasing stigma around helping children contribute to this increased involvement. Financial support from parents and adult children living at home can have positive effects on their relationships.
