Fast-Spreading Wildfires in Texas Panhandle Prompt Evacuations

Rapidly spreading wildfires in Texas and Oklahoma have led to evacuations and the closure of a nuclear weapons disassembly plant. The Texas governor declared a disaster in 60 counties and urged residents to avoid activities that could spark fires. The largest blaze, the Smokehouse Creek fire, has spread to 500,000 acres and is out of control. Evacuations were ordered in several towns, and a hospital system in Canadian evacuated all patients and staff. The fires have caused extensive damage, and air quality alerts were issued due to smoke. The Pantex plant suspended operations and evacuated nonessential personnel as a precaution. Unseasonably high temperatures and winds have also fueled wildfires in Nebraska and Kansas.
