A Year After a Devastating Quake: Container Cities, Trials and Grief

One year after a devastating earthquake, Turkey continues to struggle in rebuilding efforts, aiding survivors, and seeking accountability for subpar construction. The anniversary was marked by emotional gatherings and protests, as the 7.8-magnitude quake wreaked havoc, leaving over 53,000 dead in southern Turkey and 6,000 in northern Syria. Survivors remain disillusioned by the slow progress in reconstruction, the lack of accountability for compromised buildings, and the government's failure to enforce safety standards. President Erdogan's promise to build new homes within a year has seen partial fulfillment, leaving many displaced and grappling with grief and injuries. Efforts to prosecute those responsible for faulty constructions are progressing sluggishly.
