A Fern’s ‘Zombie’ Leaves Sprout Unusual Roots

In the rainforests of western Panama, biologist Jim Dalling discovered tree ferns with long leaves that transformed into roots after dying. This unique adaptation, observed in the Cyathea rojasiana fern, allows it to access nutrients in nutrient-poor soil. This discovery highlights the importance of studying and appreciating the natural world. Further research is needed to understand the biochemical and developmental processes behind this phenomenon.
