Turkey’s Parliament, After Delay, Backs Sweden’s NATO Bid

Turkey's Parliament has approved Sweden's NATO membership, bringing the Nordic nation closer to joining the military alliance and alleviating tensions that had hindered Western efforts to isolate Russia over the conflict in Ukraine. The vote of 287 to 55 in favor, with four abstentions, paves the way for Sweden's accession once it is published in the official gazette. This move is seen as a significant step for NATO in strengthening its deterrence against Russia. Despite the approval, Sweden's swift entry is not guaranteed as Turkey could delay its formal approval, and Hungary's decision remains uncertain. The timing and reasons for Hungary's delay in approving Sweden's bid are unclear.
