These Two Cicada Broods Will Emerge Together for the First Time Since 1803

Two cicada broods, Brood XIX and Brood XIII, are set to emerge simultaneously this spring for the first time since 1803. This rare event will occur in the Midwest and Southeastern United States, with an estimated one trillion cicadas appearing in a 16-state area. The insects will begin to emerge in late April, and their presence is expected to last for about six weeks. This dual emergence also presents the possibility of interbreeding, potentially leading to the creation of a new brood set to a new cycle. While the sheer number of cicadas may seem overwhelming, experts advise embracing this rare natural event and letting the bugs be, as they play a crucial role in the ecosystem.
