Hate Crimes Reported in Schools Nearly Doubled Between 2018 and 2022

Hate crimes in schools and colleges nearly doubled between 2018 and 2022, with black students being the most frequent victims, followed by L.G.B.T.Q. and Jewish students. The F.B.I. reported about 1,300 hate crimes in educational institutions in 2022, up from 700 in 2018. The rise in reporting may be linked to increased awareness of racism and a backlash against movements addressing it. The data is of interest to educators and policymakers, especially in light of increased bias incidents following the Israel-Gaza conflict in 2023. Organizations are calling for action from policymakers in response to these trends.
